A raucous night of Canadian Short Films Canadian filmmakers Hope Thompson and Simone Jones, have compiled an exciting and eclectic program of Canadian shorts along with a couple of foreign surprises. Highlights include David Roche Talks about Love, a multiple award-winning short film by Jeremy Podeswa (Eclipse, The Five Senses) and Mike Hoolboom's Letters from Home, an eloquent and elegant interpretation of AIDs activist Vito Russo's diaries. The 90-minute program features animation, athleticism, appropriation and experimentation. It's sure to please anyone who loves independent cinema! Enter: the Beaver is a key component of Thompson and Jones' Fundraising efforts for their upcoming film production VIAL. Come out to see some great examples of independent filmmaking while supporting a local production that celebrates a great Pittsburgh icon: Mary Robert Rinehart! Using a key scene from Mary Roberts Rinehart's novel "The Burned Chair", Thompson and Jones' VIAL plunges the viewer into the heart of the mystery novel. Shot in glorious black and white by Pittsburgh's award-winning cinematographer Mark Knobil, (The Bread, My Sweet ) VIAL masterfully pulls the viewer directly into the center of Rinehart's classic "whodonnit." VIAL will premiere this autumn at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts Biennial as a film installation where the viewer will enter a constructed set intended to blur the distinction between the existing architecture and the film screen. Intending to discover what a true "people's art" would look like, the artists, with the support of the Nation Institute, hired Marttila & Kiley, Inc. to conduct the first poll. In 1994, they began the process which resulted in America's Most Wanted and America's Least Wanted paintings, which were exhibited in New York at the Alternative Museum under the title "People's Choice." http://www.diacenter.org/km/ http://www.elephantart.com/ BUS: 61A/B/C, 67A/F --------------------------------------------------- 3. ------------------------------------------------ Opus One Concerts presents THIS THURSDAY January 24th al. from moe. an electronic experience Lava Lounge 2204 E. Having toured Japan, Canada, and criss-crossing the US on countless occasions since 1991, moe. has made a name for themselves as one of the preeminate jambands selling out large theatres across the country. "al.one" blends vintage Pink Floyd & avant garde Portishead w/ the pop sensibilities of Moby. The album embarks the listener on a journey through adventurous electo-soundscapes, one second touching on a more chill-out, downtempo atmosphere, the next second bringing on sequence-driven breakbeats. The ubiquity and inevitability of change is exemplified by life-form adaptations in biological systems in response to environmental change, weathering of rocks that produces new assemblages of minerals to re-establish physico-chemical equilibrium under new exposure conditions, and changes in traditional customs as technology-driven industrialization installs new socio-economic order in many societies and regions of the world. Traditional customs are an embodiment of beliefs, institutions and actions that historically define the existence of a particular society. In this lecture, Professor Hilary Inyang will discuss the role of technological innovation and acceptance of such innovation on changes in socio-economic systems in many global regions and countries that he has visited in the course of his environmental research/scientific expeditions and sustainable development activities. He will also comment on the interplay between traditional customs and industrialization factors, including the opportunities and constraints of the latter in enabling the sustenance of national economic productivity and reasonable quality of life in many regions, including Africa, Russia, China, South America, North America and Europe. http://www.cmu.edu/home/visitors/map/university.html BUS: 61A/B/C, 67A/F --------------------------------------------------- 9. ------------------------------------------------ Partay at the Skinny Building !!
